For some years now, textiles made from natural fibres have been attracting a growing number of designers who want to anchor their projects in specific territories and make the most of local resources. The ‘Le Champ des possibles' exhibition brings together a selection of pieces by five of these designers, giving an insight into a practice that eludes labels, situated at the crossroads of the visual arts and design.
This was the case for Inès Bressand, a designer, and Rémi Marilleau, a textile craftsman, who used wool and cotton to conduct research into quilting during a residency at the Martell Foundation in Cognac. For two months, they explored upholstery, a technique for constraining the material. Their volumes will interact with the works of visual artists Elise Peroi and Jeanne Tresvaux du Fraval, who are also reinterpreting traditional practices and skills. The former uses tapestry to create aerial architectures in thread and wood, such as ‘Vent dominant', installed in the main space, a woven version of a herdsman's hut. The second explores the forms and functions of everyday objects, such as traditional Provençal garments, of which she has imagined new versions. Clothes (but not only clothes) are also at the heart of the work of Harumi Sugiura, a textile craftswoman who has been devoting herself for over ten years to the art of pleating fabric and vegetable dyeing, creating fabrics that look like supple origami.
This body of research and production, blurring the boundaries between craft and contemporary creation, will be on show in the Studio, as a stroll through the range of possibilities offered by the reappropriation of natural materials and the techniques associated with them.
